In 1988 he took a few bottles of a barleywine he and his brother brewed, submitted it to the American Homebrewers Association competition, and was named Homebrewer of the Year. A year later, John had become the head brewer of Rogue Ales and resurrected the recipe to create Old Crustacean Barleywine Style Ale.To this day the recipe remains the same.
